Indigenous Film: Our Stories: Short Films
Please join us for a virtual program featuring three short films followed by a live Zoom conversation with the filmmakers.

"Onyionhwentsïio' (Our Wonderful Land)," director Nicolas Renaud (Huron-Wendat Frst Nation of Wendake). The story and drawings in this animation are based on archival photos from the late 19th to mid-20th century, featuring Wendat and Innu guides hired by private fish and game clubs; and includes a poem by Wendat writer Jean Sioui. What weighs on one’s back in a portage trail can be the necessities of life or five centuries of history. (Nicolas Renaud, 2022, 4 min.).

"Savage/Future," director Terry Jones (Seneca – Wolf Clan). Editing to the soundscape of shaking Iroquois white corn and tapping, filmmaker Terry Jones uses personal and historic still images to link his family and the American Indian boarding school experience. (TornJersey Media, 2022, 3 min.).

"Mokadjige", director Craig Commanda (Anishinaabe from Kitigan Zibi). Trough a collage of sights and sounds from nature, cityscapes and the filmmaker’s three-dimensional beadwork, Commanda presents a meditation and commentary on the contrasts and similarities of modern ways of living and the natural world that we inhabit. The film evokes memory and place, connecting past, present, and looking to the future. (Wapikoni Mobile, 2022, 6 min.).
